WHAT IS THE INSTITUTE FOR
SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP?
The Institute for Social
Entrepreneurship is a multi-disciplinary service effort between the Division
of Business Administration & Management and the Division of Social Work &
Social Science. The combined efforts resulted in the development of the
Institute for Social Entrepreneurship harnessing the spirit of an
entrepreneur (one who undertakes and is creative/innovative in thinking and
action) with a social focus (for the common good).
WHAT IS SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP?
Social Entrepreneurs are individuals or
organizations with an explicit social mission to create value by being
change agents. They relentlessly pursue opportunities to:
- Create and sustain social value
- Apply innovative approaches
- Act boldly without constraint of limited resources
- Exhibit a heightened sense of accountability to the community
Social Entrepreneurs include:
- Organizations Community Development Corporations
- Government Businesses Colleges & Universities
- Residents Agencies
- Foundations Schools
WHAT ARE THE COMPONENTS OF THE INSTITUTE?
* Community Outreach and Service Learning Internship Initiative supports
local community development initiatives in targeted areas in the City of
Rochester by utilizing student and faculty teams to assist in community
development initiatives.
* Community Economic Development Institute sessions provide community
development organizations, agencies and businesses with workshops that will
enhance their core business, social development skills and knowledge.
* The Youth Entrepreneurship strategy is to begin developing successful
young people before they enter college through partnerships with the Charles
Finney School and mentoring support to programs that provide
entrepreneurship training to youth.
* Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) a campus-based entrepreneurial program
that supports involvement in community development and outreach projects,
social development outreach efforts, Institute sponsored training sessions,
youth entrepreneurship, volunteer projects, hosting of seminars and an
annual entrepreneurship competition.
* The Entrepreneurship Resource Center serves a key support system for the
Community Outreach and Service Learning Internship Initiative as well as a
resource to entrepreneurs. The Center is located at the existing outreach
site in His Branches on 340 Arnett Blvd. The Center contains the following
business and social work tools:
* Computer workstations, copier, fax and phone services
* Internet access & links to business and social work sites
* Meeting space for instruction, events & consultation
* Library - access to online and printed materials: business & social work
periodicals, publications, etc.
* Business and Marketing software
* Mapping & Geographic Information Systems software
The Center also provides an ideal site to host community meetings; for
students to conduct research or complete internship class assignments; for
faculty & students to work with community groups on development and research
projects.
