TO                   HIS BRANCHES BOARD OF DIRECTORS                         May 31, 2003

FROM             EUGENE F. YOUNG

SUBJECT:       MINUTES OF THE MAY 27, 2003 HIS BRANCHES BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING

DIRECTORS PRESENT: W. MOREHOUSE, A. GEYER, AND E. YOUNG

DIRECTORS ABSENT: D. BEINETTI, J. BOWMAN, D. WILSON, AND G. FADNER

GUESTS:  S. MOREHOUSE, L. ERB

The meeting opened with prayer.

A quorum was not present so the following informal discussion was held.

There was a discussion of a Development Office/ Director. The job would entail work with different ministries, supervise the renovation program, and develop programs. Tabitha Hairston is a possible candidate. Funding is an issue. Tabitha currently has a job. She has promised to put in extra time on her job to make up time she missed during her schooling. Dr. Morehouse discussed with her the possibility of doing the director job part time. Fund raising would be part of the job including raising the money for the salary. Tabitha is available to talk to His Branches on Saturday May 31 regarding her future. She has the capabilities to do the job. L. Erb is available for the meeting. Other people that will be invited are David Dey, Fred Coisman of the Roberts Psychology Department, Mark Redfield, and Joyce Wagner (of the Roberts Counseling Department). The meeting will be at the Arnett Boulevard facility.

It was suggested that David Hoselton should be contacted to get information on possible sources of private funding to supplement government funding. Private funding offers more flexibility than government funding.

Roberts Wesleyan is considering applying for a HUD grant. They have discussed a position in the grant with Tabitha. L. Erb will be the part time director of the grant. If they get the grant, there is the possibility that they could help His Branches. The target area for the grant activity is Sector 4. The Southwest Area Neighborhood Association is helping with the grant process. The grant would be used to fund the Community Outreach Partnership Centers (COPC). The start up would be October 1, 2003 and it would be for three years. Roberts has done a campus inventory of resources to help the project. There are political problems in sector 4 with respect to its representation on the Rochester Common Council.

The Salvation Army has a mentoring project to help people move from welfare to work. The idea is to connect them to the faith community as well. The project is still not off the ground and it is expected that COPC could help with the project.

G. Fadner is getting more tied up in church activities. Dr. Morehouse has discussed with Carl Jenks, Glenn’s pastor, the possibilities of other persons from New Hope Church who could replace Glenn on the His Branches Board. They are looking for people who are gifted in implementing projects. Mark Redfield and Robert Blackhall are interested in implementing projects as well. The question is how to connect things together. L. Erb will look into how to make the proper connections between activities.

There has been a contact with Art Collier of Rochester Primary Care Network. Unfortunately a scheduled meeting with him did not occur because of a time mix up. This network is a possible funding source for the medical ministry. Another meeting will be pursued.

The Roberts Counseling Center is looking for a satellite office in Sector 4. The His Branches building is a candidate. Especially since CompassCare is considering moving out of the building.

The Christian Community Health Fellowship (CCHF) Workshop is scheduled for September 21-24, 2003. The topic is Community Health Centers. There is also a seminar October 27-29, 2003 on start up of health centers and free clinics. The September conference is what is more relevant to His Branches. CCHF will pay for two participants from each ministry to come to the conference. Consideration was given to sending Dr. Chang and the development director to the conference. Dr. Morehouse will send an application for the September conference.

Since Grace Family Medicine and CompassCare share the nurse who does the ultrasound, this relationship will change if and when CompassCare leaves the Arnett Boulevard facility. The nurse will remain with CompassCare. CompassCare has also found another doctor to serve as their Medical Director. Grace Family Medicine is interviewing office nurse candidates. They are considering both RNs and LPNs. Because of costs the LPNs will be given first priority.

Diane Bassett, E. Young’s daughter, has been hired as a part-time secretary for Grace Family Medicine. She will work eight hours but the need is for 20 hours. They are looking for a second person to fill the rest of the position.

His Branches financial management still continues to be a problem. Some improvement has come about, but more fundamental structural changes are needed.

The next meeting will be June 10, 2003 at 7:30 AM at 374 Wellington Avenue.

The meeting closed with prayer.
